The Civil Rights Unit (CRU) enforces Vermont state laws that (i) prohibit employment discrimination and other unfair employment practices, (ii) offer employees job-protected leave to care for themselves or their family members, and (iii) provide civil remedies for victims of hate crimes.
The Vermont Attorney General’s Office does not represent or advise individuals regarding immigration matters. However, Vermont does have a number of resources available at no or reduced cost:

To request immediate legal help with an immigration arrest that is currently taking place or has just taken place:

Telephone: The Vermont Migrant Justice emergency response line, available at 802-881-7229, may be able to refer you to attorneys providing free legal defense for detained individuals.

Online: The Vermont Asylum Assistance Project (VAAP) maintains an online ICE Tracker that allows individuals to report arrests or detentions and to request legal assistance.

To request immigration legal help for someone who is NOT detained:

Telephone: Legal Services Vermont (LSV) maintains an intake line, available at 800-889-2047, where individuals may request legal services in any language. LSV will return calls with an interpreter as needed.
